Matthew Morrocco's ongoing Orchid series pictures the artist anonymously, posing freely in different colored body suits and in different settings. Through masked self-portraiture, Morrocco destabilizes any notion in the photograph of "being seen", as well as questions the fixed or malleable nature of identity. Developing upon his Orchid series while quarantined at home in LA, Morrocco turned his bedroom into a shooting and exhibition space, and visited a nearby nature reserve to make his work. He also constructed triptych narratives with images of sunsets and sunrises that he had shot on a trip cross-country in 2019. Illustrating the stages of the sun, the triptychs represent a certain nostalgia for the freedom of travel, and the key elements of the artist's medium: light and time.
